Description
Virtual Archaeology Field School
Monday, June 21-Friday, July 2, 2021
This virtual course is intended to offers students in the fields of archaeology, anthropology, history, or related fields, training in archaeological methodology. Because social science research has been interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, archaeologists are relying on mediated techniques to continue their research. This virtual field school offers a series of eight self-paced modules including material and digital techniques that participants can explore and apply. The instructor provides recorded tours and videos from the museum grounds and lab, digital course readings, and virtual activities.
There is a specific focus on the c. 1750 Penhallow House, where archaeological field schools excavated thousands of artifacts from 2016-2018. The Penhallow House is currently the focus of a grant-funded rehabilitation effort to restore part of the house to its early 20th-century appearance when it was the home of an African American family. The course will culminate in participants’ development of an online Story Map and a blog post based on Penhallow artifact research.
Although this course will be offered entirely online, local participants are invited to join Archaeologist Alexandra Martin on-site at the museum on Monday, June 21, 1-2:30 PM, for an in-person guided tour of the museum’s archaeological sites. Limited to 12 participants and is on a first-come, first-served basis.
