This a concise two-day course in the theory and practice of basic celestial navigation is presented by the Boatshop at Strawbery Banke.
Participants learn basic principles, time-keeping, almanac usage, sight reduction methods and plotting, and training and observation with a marine sextant. Alternative use of a scientific hand calculator will be discussed, and a PC-based programmed calculator emulator offered.
At the conclusion, participants will be able to take, reduce and plot positions from celestial sights of the sun –our closest star -- and possibly other stars, the moon and planets, if time and interest permit.
No special math skills are required -- only addition and subtraction, and table look-ups. All materials provided, just bring your interest and enthusiasm and be ready to have fun!
